Off-Ice Hockey Training......

"Off-Ice Training...Made Simple"

The clock is ticking...

As a hockey coach, there's nothing more valuable than time. Between work, family and juggling practice - there's no wonder we have little time to properly plan hockey practice.

Hey, as a hockey coach I can relate. Remember when Bill Clinton said "I feel your pain". Well I do!

So I went on a mission (a selfish one at first) to create a template that would help me organize all my future off-ice practices. There were 2 goals for doing this...

1.Make it brain-dead simple to run training programs for this season (and future seasons)
2.If I couldn't make practice, I could hand my "templates" over to an assistant for them to run it without missing a beat
3.Save time! By not having to re-create the wheel each day, it saves me at least 2-3 hours per week.

About 6 months ago, I let Mark, a friend of mine who is also a hockey coach, "borrow" my system. And the results were astonishing..

He said I'd be crazy not to offer this to other coaches. In fact, he said I should charge at least $500 for this program (since that is what other "gurus" charge for similar programs - and they are not nearly as complete as mine).

So, after some thought, I decided to take a leap and humbly offer my system for sale to you, my fellow coach. I took some time to add in the most up-to-date information and make it a complete “how-to” guide.

(NOJHL) Temiscaming Royals Professional Fitness Testing......

The Temiscaming Royals are getting ready for the upcoming season with some help from some experts from Nipissing University.

A group of four volunteer professors headed by Royals Strength and Athletic Development Coordinator Rob Graham were in Temiscaming for two days this week at training camp doing numerous high performance dryland and on-ice fitness tests on the Royals players.

The group from Nipissing Universities Faculty of Education includes Dr. Michel Johnson, who has done fitness research and testing at American Hockey League level training camps, Dr. Dean Hay, Prof. Melanie Cook and Graham, who asked them to help out with this training and fitness testing initiative.

“We are here mostly for the fun of it but mainly because our group has a passion for sport and fitness,” said Graham who teamed up with Dr. Johnson to do individual high performance fitness testing on Royals forward Stephan Gunner earlier this summer.

Royals Director of Hockey Operations Randy Edmonds believes you won’t find this caliber of fitness testing offered at the Jr. ‘A’ level anywhere else in Canada.

“They are very experienced, they have both an athletic background themselves plus they have the science and the education behind them so I like to think the people that we have on the ice today from Nip. U are as good as anyone in Canada and we are very fortunate to have them here,” said Edmonds about the Nipissing University team which finished its first series of tests on Tuesday.

“We hope we can incorporate them into our hockey program for the next few years. Building the program in Temiscaming is about bringing in some good people, step by step, and we are very fortunate to have them here.”

The intensive testing will be conducted four times during the season to monitor the fitness of the players throughout the NOJHL season.

(MJHL) Steinbach Pistons sign seven midget AAA players......

STEINBACH – The Steinbach Pistons announced recently the commitments of seven Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League (MMHL) All-Stars for the upcoming Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

Among the group is one goalie, three defencemen and three forwards. Former Kenora Thistles goalie T.J. Pocock has committed to the Pistons. Hailing from Fort Frances, Ont., Pocock, 18, went 6-12-1 with a 5.89 goals-against average in 1,274 minutes of work with the Thistles and
faced over 50 shots a game with one of the loop's weaker teams.

Pocock was also named the MMHL defensive player of the week for Week 10.

On defence, newly acquired Landon Hall headlines a group of strong 1992-born defencemen that also includes Kyle Rous and Connor Sisson.

Hall, 17, tallied six goals and 24 assists for 30 points in 39 games
with the Southwest Cougars last season. The native of Killarney added two goals and three assists in five playoff games and was the MMHL defensive player of the month for October.

In 42 games with the Central Plains Capitals a year ago, Rous, 16,
scored nine goals and 13 assists for 22 points, while adding 69 penalty minutes. The Winnipeg native appeared in four games with the Beausejour Blades last season as an affiliated player and scored a goal and three assists for four points.

Sisson, 17, is a towering defenceman from Elm Creek. He scored six goals and added 17 assists for 23 points in 39 games with the Pembina Valley Hawks last season. The 6-foot-4 rearguard also racked up 111 penalty minutes. In the post-season, he had four assists in seven games.

At forward, a local product and pair of Interlake players have committed to play in Steinbach next season.

Eric Coloumbe, whose MJHL rights were acquired earlier this summer from the Swan Valley Stampeders, will don a Pistons jersey next season. The skilled forward from St. Malo led the Eastman Selects in scoring a year ago by netting 20 goals and 36 assists for 56 points in 43 games. He was also the team's leading scorer in the playoffs with six goals and four assists for 10 points in just four games.

In Week 15, Coulombe, 17, was the MMHL offensive player of the week.

Mike Gemmill, 17, becomes a Piston after an impressive AAA midget career with the Interlake Lightning that spanned three seasons. The Stonewall product led the Lightning in scoring a year ago with 25 goals and 24 assists for 49 points in 42 games. He tallied three goals and five assists for eight points in five playoff games, which included a first round upset of the Norman Northstars.

Gemmill's teammate in Interlake, Trent Genyk has also committed to the Pistons. The 6-foot rugged forward out of Winnipeg Beach tallied 19 goals and 14 assists for 33 points in 44 games last season, while also racking up a team-high 90 penalty minutes. He added two goals and three assists in five playoff games.

All seven players will be in Steinbach at the end of the month when the Pistons open main camp in Aug. 26 at the T.G. Smith Centre. The Pistons 2009 Training Camp begins on Aug. 23 with Rookie Camp.

(BC Hockey League) Westside Warriors Find Top Offensive Forward......

New Westside Warriors head coach Darren Yopyk has been looking for a top offensive player since taking over the team in early July.

Last week he found that player, albeit in an unexpected place.

The Warriors learned last week that Cam Reid, drafted in the NHL Entry Draft this summer, will return to the Warriors this year after having his NCAA Div. 1 scholarship deferred for a year.

“I’m really excited to be coming back this year,” said Reid, who was expected to begin an NCAA career with New Hampshire but instead will have one more year of seasoning at the junior A level.

“I want to come back and help Westside in whatever way I can. I think we have a really deep team this year and hopefully we can go far.”

Reid was acquired by the Warriors days before last season’s B.C. Hockey League trade deadline for Brett Howe and Craig Eisenhut.

The 17-year-old was a point-a-game player in 17 regular season and eight playoff games. It was expected that would be the last Warriors fans would see of Reid because the Delta native was committed to New Hampshire when he arrived in West Kelowna.

But Reid will return and looks to make an even bigger impact this year having been drafted by Nashville in the seventh round of the NHL Entry Draft and attending the Predators NHL prospects’ camp.

“It was an unbelievable summer,” he said. “My experience in Nashville was eye opening. I definitely learned a lot about what it takes to get to the next level. It made me work a lot harder.”

Reid will come into the season at 198 pounds on a 6-foot-3 frame, compared to last season when he ended the year at 175 pounds.

For coach Yopyk, the return of Reid was a nice surprise.

“I think we’ve been looking since I got here for a number one centre and he’s certainly a guy that can fill that role,” said Yopyk. “He’s a well-established player and a high end kid.”

Team president Gary Gelinas says it’s good for the entire league.

“We’re excited to have Cam coming back,” said Gelinas, the Warriors general manager and president. “We’re going to be counting on Cam to be a leader, not only on our team but in the league. Any time you have an NHL draft pick on your team that’s exciting for the fans.”

Reid gives the Warriors 13 players returning as they get set to kick off main training camp this Thursday.

The Warriors camp will run through Sunday and end with an intra squad game Aug. 30, 6 p.m., at Royal LePage Place.

Westside Warriors (BC Hockey League) Open Training Camp......

The Westside Warriors of the B.C. Hockey League will open training camp for the 2009-2010 BCHL season Thursday Aug. 27 at Royal LePage Place in West Kelowna.

The Warriors are expecting about 45 players to its camp including 10 returning veterans to the camp which will run through Sunday Aug. 30 which wraps up with the annual intra-squad game.

The Warriors will hold its first team practise the very next day in preparation for the season which opens Sept. 11 with the Warriors in Prince George as part of a three day northern road trip to open the 60 game schedule.

Among the veterans returning to the Warriors are three local minor hockey products, one of the top goalies in the BCHL and a solid core of second year players.

Winfield Minor Hockey product Trevor Bailey will be 20 this year and is the highest returning scorer. He and Brendan Ellis of Kelowna are two of three players who have been with the Warriors in each of its three seasons. Kelowna’s Tyler Krause will be in his second season.

Goalie Kevin Jebson returns as a 20-year-old and shopuld be one of the top goalies in the league after posting a 2.66 goals against and .909 save percentage in 47 games last season with the Warriors.

It will be the Warriors first training camp with new head coach and director of player personnel Darren Yopyk, hired this summer from NCAA Div. I Merricack University.

"The Westside Warriors' organization is extremely excited about our upcoming main camp,” said Yopyk. “The camp will be very competitive this year with a good blend of veterans and rookies. We are extremely happy with the quality and depth of all of our invitees. We expect an intense try-out process. We are confident we will ice a high quality team coming out of camp. I am excited to have all of the players here, and am eager to get the season underway."

The Warriors have made the playoffs in each of its first three years in West Kelowna as part of the nine team BCHL Interior Conference. Williams Lake is the conference’s ninth team.

The Warriors will have five exhibition games prior to the BCHL regular season:

BCHL's Westside Warriors NHL Draft Pick Returning For 09 - 10 Season......

Warriors' Reid returns for 2009/10 campaign
Monday, August 24, 2009 - Submitted by Westside Warriors

The Westside Warriors are pleased to announce that 2009 National Hockey League draft pick Cam Reid will be back with the Warriors for the 2009/10 B.C. Hockey League season.

Reid, who was selected in the seventh round of the NHL Entry Draft this past summer by the Nashville Predators, has had his NCAA Div. I scholarship deferred for one year. The 17 year-old was already committed to the University of New Hampshire when he was acquired by the Warriors at last year’s trade deadline.

It was expected he would head to university but deferring the scholarship will allow Reid to return for another year with the Warriors. Reid scored a point per game after joining the Warriors and was the team's highest scoring forward in the BCHL playoffs last season.

“I think we’ve been looking since I got here for a number one centre and Cam is certainly a guy that can fill that role,” said Yopyk. “He’s a well-established player and a high end kid.”

Team president Gary Gelinas says that Reid're return is good for the entire league.

“We’re excited to have Cam coming back,” said Gelinas, the Warriors general manager and president. “We’re going to be counting on Cam to be a leader, not only on our team but in the league. Any time you have an NHL draft pick on your team that’s exciting for the fans.”

The Warriors now have 13 players returning from last year’s team that won 37 games in the BCHL Interior conference. Westside kicks off its training camp this Thursday and plays its first exhibition game Sept. 1 prior to the BCHL season opener on Sept. 11 in Prince George. The Warriors home opener is Sept. 18 against Penticton.
