(SJHL) Good News for Battlefords Fans Aged 19 and Over......

The Battlefords North Stars hockey club is pleased to announce that effective Friday, October 2nd, fans will be able to enjoy alcoholic beverages in the stands during Battlefords North Star’s games.

The idea has been officially approved by the City of North Battleford and the Sask. Liquor Board.

“It becomes more of an enjoyable outing for fans,” said North Star’s President Ray Adelman who helped spear-head this idea. “We as a board feel like we have to step forward and try and generate more money for the hockey club, and this is a great way to offset some of our costs.”

Fans will only be allowed to purchase a maximum of two drinks per purchase, and must provide two pieces of ID. Liquor consumption in the stands will be cut off at the 10:00 mark of the third period.

“We hope that this addition will help fans enjoy our product even further. This is a privilege and we hope that our fans treat it as such,” said Adelman. “This way you don’t have to rush your beer between periods. You can relax, and spend more time visiting with fellow fans at your seats with a drink in hand.”

Up until this point, the North Stars were one of the few teams in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League that did not allow alcohol in the stands. Adelman hinted that some teams have generated close to 20,000$ of extra income thanks to this concept.

The Hot Stove Lounge will also be used after weekend home games for a new feature called “Coaches Corner.” After each weekend home-game, win or lose, Dan O’Connor will host a show with Ken Pearson and Blair Atcheynum. Fans will be encouraged to submit their questions to the coaching staff, and a several questions will be answered after each game.

The North Stars are working hard during the 09-10 season to involve the fans in more ways then ever before.

(BCHL) Preview: Interior powers Vipers and Warriors set to clash in Westside......

The Vernon Vipers will put their 17-game winning streak on the line tonight in Westside in the first contest of a three-day, three-game weekend set against a trio of the league's hottest teams.

Their hosts enter the match-up with an unblemished 3-0 home record and a 5-2 mark overall. Westside is led offensively by forward Cam Reid and Trevor Bailey, but has spread its goal-scoring around early in the season to the tune of six players with a better than a point-per-game average. One of those players -- 17-year old Abbotsford native Grayson Downing -- and Reid are back in the line-up following a three-day stint in Okotoks, Alberts at Team Canada West's Evaluation Camp for the 2009 World Junior A Challenge.

"They are high-end skilled guys and hard-working guys, especially in the corners," Downing says of the Vipers. "It’s hard to get the puck away from them and they drive hard to the net. They are just tough guys to play against."

Perhaps even more impressive than their 6-0 record to open the season is the fact that Vernon has allowed just eight goals through six games. Netminder Graeme Gordon has been a calming presence in net, with a 1.39 goals-against average and .943 save percentage to show for five wins in five starts.

They're also excelling despite the fact that each of their opponents uses them as a gauge for their own early season progress.

"They’re the champs and they have a great program," said Yopyk. "We’re not quite there yet, but we’ll find some things out on Friday. Right now they’re up the ladder where we want to be and on Friday we’re going to try to knock them down a bit."

The Vipers round out a busy weekend with home games against the Penticton Vees and Burnaby Express on Saturday and Sunday, while Westside is idle on Saturday night before a matinee match-up with the Merritt Centennials at 2:30 PM on Sunday.

(SIJHL) “Our job is to stay focused…” Home Opener Tomorrow Night!......

“Fort William has hopped out of the gate quickly and are off to a great start. Their PP and PK are solid, they have excellent goaltending and obviously a lot of talent with their Forwards and Defense. It’s our opening weekend at home and we’re excited to play against the first place team. That being said, our job is to stay focused and not let these emotions take over our bench.” said Coach Clint Mylymok when asked about the upcoming home opener this Friday night.

The Dryden Ice Dogs will be hosting the first place team, Fort William Northstars Friday and Saturday Night, this weekend. Friday October 2, 2009, that puck will drop at 7:30pm, and the same for Saturday October 3, 2009. Should be quite the barn burner, as both teams are undefeated so far this season. Dryden will be looking to make it 4 wins in a row, and Fort William Northstars will be looking to go 7 Wins in a row. Tickets can be purchased in advanced, at Barrett’s Sporting Goods in downtown Dryden.

Also, don’t miss out on the 400 Club. Currently ( as of Sept. 30, 2009 ), 287 of 400 memberships have been sold.

(WHL) Edmonton Oil Kings GAME NIGHT PREVIEW......

The Edmonton Oil Kings picked up 5 of a possible 6 points on their recent 3 game road trip. After a 3-2 shootout loss to the Kootenay Ice in Cranbrook BC, the team won two games in a row in Saskatchewan over the weekend. The Oil Kings downed the Saskatoon Blades 4-2 on Friday. Defenseman Tyler Hlookoff scored the winner. Edmonton downed the Prince Albert Raiders 3-2 Saturday to improve their record to 2-1-0-1. Brent Raedeke scored the winner late in the third period 30 seconds after the Raiders tied the game. The Oil Kings will now look for their first home win after dropping a 4-2 decision to the Calgary Hitmen on Opening Night.

OIL KINGS STREAKS: The Edmonton Oil Kings have won 2 games in a row and have earned a point in three straight games. Brent Raedeke has scored a goal in all four Oil Kings games and has 6 points. Tomas Vincour has a point in all 4 Oil Kings games racking up a team leading 7 points, including 3 goals. Vincour had 1 goal and 2 assists in Prince Albert and has been in on the last 4 goals the Oil Kings have scored. TJ Foster is on a 2 game point streak where he has picked up 4 assists. Alternate Captain Brett Breitkreuz is also on a 2 game point streak with one assist in each game in Saskatchewan. Rookie Dylan Wruck and defenseman Mark Pysyk had two game point streaks stopped in Saskatoon. Interestingly enough, Fosters streak began when he was moved up to play with Raedeke and Vincour, while Wrucks streak ended when he was bumped off the same line.

JUNG IS BUSY: Torrie Jung has started all 4 Oil Kings games and has been improving every start. He has faced a lot of rubber in his 244 minutes played. Jung has stopped 134 shots including a season high 42 against Prince Albert on Saturday. Jung is 3rd in the WHL with a .937 save percentage and he is 11th in the league with a 2.12 goals against average.

VS MEDICINE HAT: The Medicine Hat Tigers have proved to be a real problem for the Oil Kings. Edmonton has only managed one win in 14 games against the Tigers and their overall record is 1-9-1-3. The Tigers record this season is 2-0-0-1 and they are tied with the Oil Kings for second place in the Central Division with 5 points. Both teams have lost to the 4-0 Calgary Hitmen who sit in first place in the Central.

STUFF THE BUS FOR THE EDMONTON FOOD BANK: The Oil Kings will attempt to stuff the bus on Thanksgiving Monday when they host the Brandon Wheat Kings. Fans are asked to bring a non-perishable food item with them to the game on October 12th. The Oil Kings bus will be parked at the main entrance to Rexall Place waiting to be filled. The puck will drop at 2:00 pm for the Thanksgiving match up. Please help us support the community and the Edmonton Food Bank.

TRANSACTIONS: The Oil Kings roster is down to 24 players. Second year forward Colton Stephenson decided to return home. Stephenson, a native of Saskatoon, played in 18 games with Edmonton last year picking up a pair of assists. The Oil Kings are now carrying 14 forwards, 8 defensemen and 2 goalies.

SCHEDULE: Tonight’s contest is the first of two home games for the Oil Kings and it marks the return of Wiener Wednesday. Hot dogs are $2 all game long at the concessions. The Oil Kings will get a day off and then host the Moose Jaw Warriors Friday, October 2nd. This will be the first Jersey Friday on this year’s schedule. Make sure you where your Oil Kings jersey to the game to get a chance to win some great prizes. It will also help intimidate the Warriors as the Oil Kings look to make it 3 wins in a row against Saskatchewan opponents. The Oil Kings will then play 3 more contests. The team will make a trip to Medicine Hat for a rematch on October 4th. Next up are games on back to back nights against the Lethbridge Hurricanes on October 9th and the Swift Current Broncos on October 10th.

The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Andrew Hayes of the Brandon Wheat Kings is the CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending September 27. Hayes was perfect in two starts making 41 saves to earn two shutout victories with a 0.000 goals-against-average and a save percentage of 1.000.

Hayes began his week making 16 saves as third star of the game Friday night when the Wheat Kings played host to the Swift Current Broncos in their home opener and emerged with a 3-0 win. He followed that up with a first star performance Saturday night in Moose Jaw with 25 saves to beat the Warriors 4-0. The Wheat Kings now carry a record of 3-1-0-0 with all three wins coming in the form of shutout victories by Hayes. He is approaching the WHL record for consecutive shutouts of four games currently held by Chris Worthy of the Flin Flon Bombers set in 1968.

Hayes, a 19-year-old from Sherwood Park, AB, is in his third WHL season with the Wheat Kings. In four games so far this season for the hosts of the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup, Hayes has posted a goals-against-average of 1.50 with a save percentage of .943. (OHL) Canucks assign Hodgson to Battalion......

The Vancouver Canucks assigned centre Cody Hodgson to the Brampton Battalion on Tuesday.

Hodgson, a 19-year-old who had one goal and one assist for two points in six National Hockey League preseason games, was hampered by a bulging disc suffered while training in July.

“By no means is it a demotion,” Lorne Henning, Vancouver's assistant general manager, told the newspaper The Province. “We think it's the best step for him. Unfortunately, he had the back and that set him back in his conditioning and he was kind of a step behind.

“It's good that he's going to get in and he's not going to be waiting here with the nine games, and I don't think that helps anybody. We want to get him back and get him playing."

Hodgson, a Markham, Ont., resident, who was selected 10th overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, can't be recalled by the Canucks until the Battalion’s Ontario Hockey League season has ended.

“I’m shocked,” said Stan Butler, Battalion director of hockey operations and head coach. “I didn’t really expect to be discussing this. Cody has been a great player here for three seasons and he has been the heart and pulse of this team. I felt very strongly that he would make the Canucks this season.”

Hodgson’s return moves the Troops’ live roster to 26 players, comprising 15 forwards, nine defencemen and two goaltenders. The Battalion, which has lost its first three games, hosts the Saginaw Spirit at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Butler said he had no idea when Hodgson will play.

“I’m sure he’s in transit right now and at the right time he’ll call me and we’ll go from there.”

Battalion captain Hodgson led the team in scoring last season with 43 goals and 49 assists for 92 points in 53 games on the way to capturing the Red Tilson Trophy as the OHL’s Most Outstanding Player and the Canadian Hockey League’s Player of the Year honours. He had 11 goals and 20 assists for 31 points in 21 playoff games as the Troops went to the OHL Championship Series.

In leading Canada to gold at the World Junior Championship at Ottawa in January, Hodgson was the tournament’s leading scorer with five goals and 11 assists for 16 points, earning all-star team recognition.

A first-round pick in the 2006 OHL Priority Selection, Hodgson is tied with Raffi Torres for second place on the Battalion’s career scoring list with 223 points from 106 goals and 117 assists in 184 games. Hodgson is the club’s all-time leader in game-winning goals with 22 and is third in goals, assists and both power-play goals and assists.

Two other players eligible to return to the Battalion remain in the professional ranks. Centre Matt Duchene is with the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, while left winger Evgeny Grachev was assigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack on Sunday by the American Hockey League club’s parent New York Rangers.

(OHL) Wolves’ Eric O’Dell Named Boston Pizza OHL Player of the Week......

The Ontario Hockey League today announced that forward Eric O’Dell of the Sudbury Wolves is the Boston Pizza OHL Player of the Week for the week ending September 27. O’Dell led the Wolves to three wins this week scoring three goals and four assists for seven points with a plus-minus rating of plus-2 in three games.

O’Dell began his week with a goal and an assist Friday night against the Barrie Colts. His goal was a power play marker scored 44 seconds into the third period, the first of three unanswered goals for the Wolves who battled back to win 4-3 for their first victory of the season. O’Dell and the Wolves carried that momentum on the road in Belleville with a 7-1 win Saturday night over the Bulls. O’Dell scored the game-winner at 4:23 of the second period and added two assists as first star of the game. His week concluded Sunday with a second star performance on the road with a goal and an assist to beat the Oshawa Generals 4-3 in overtime to extend the Wolves’ winning streak to three games.

O’Dell, a 19-year-old from Ottawa, ON, is playing in his third OHL season with the Wolves. He scored 33 goals and 30 assists for 63 points in 65 games as an Eastern Conference All-Star last season, and is currently tied for third in league scoring with 10 points. O’Dell is a prospect of the Atlanta Thrashers following a second round selection, 39th overall by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Also considered for the award this week was Justin Shugg of the Windsor Spitfires and Garret Wilson of the Owen Sound Attack who each scored four goals and two assists for six points in three games. Shugg had a five-point night with three goals and two assists Thursday night in an 8-3 win over the Erie Otters, with Wilson providing his best effort Wednesday night as first star with a goal and two assists in a 5-2 win over the Sarnia Sting. In goal, Troy Passingham of the Windsor Spitfires won three games with a goals-against-average of 2.13 and a save percentage of .938.

(NAHL) Marquette Rangers Home Opener This Friday!......

You would be right in thinking the Marquette Rangers hockey club is anxious to start the 2009 - 10 regular-season. Especially after going 3 - 1 at the North American Hockey League Showcase last week in Blaine, Minn.

Although optimistic following the strong start, head coach Kenny Miller says the team is taking a "moment by moment" approach heading into the Rangers' home opener this Friday at Lakeview Arena against the Fairbanks (Ala.) Ice Dogs of the NAHL West Division.

"The showcase was great, but that was last week," Miller said. "We're really trying to focus in on today, and what we need to do today to be a better hockey team. We're pleased at what we've seen so far, but we're really trying to get across to the guys that every day is important. We're not talking about playoffs, we're not talking about points in the division, we're not talking about next week; we're truly working on just being as good of a hockey team today as we can be."

Miller acknowledges it sounds cliché, but with a young group of players and a 54 game schedule ahead; he wants to make sure this team sees the big picture.

"If we get too far ahead of ourselves we might start focusing on things other than improvement," Miller added. "If we keep our eye on what we're doing, and take away talk of division races, points, individual numbers and things like that I really think good things will happen for this team."

The Rangers recorded Showcase wins over Texas, Wichita Falls and Kenai River (Ala.), their only loss was to the Wenatchee (Wash.) Wild at the annual event.

In the early part of the season, Miller has seen a balance in scoring between returning Rangers and a talented group of rookies.

Rookie Brent Bain (Toledo, Ohio) and third-year Ranger Garrett Ladd (Fenton, Mich.) lead the team in scoring with five points apiece on the young season, while newcomer Andrew Kolb (Toledo, Ohio) leads the team in goals so far with three in four games at the Showcase.

Kevin Kissaw has seen the bulk of the load in goal so far this season, sporting a record of 2-1 and a goals-against average of 1.33 to go with a save percentage of .968. Ranger rookie netminder Lukas Hafner saw action in the teams' win against Kenai River, picking up his first win, as well as his first point (an assist) in a Rangers uniform.

Fairbanks, a perennial power in the NAHL West Division, is off to another strong start with a 3-2-2 record on the season; including a Showcase record of 3-1 with wins over Springfield (Ill.), Albert Lea (Minn.) and the North Iowa Outlaws.

The Ice Dogs, who will stay in the lower 48 to play at Alpena next week, are led in scoring by Michael Juola (3g 8a, 11pts.) and Mark Pustin (5g 5a, 10pts.) in six games so far this season.

Tyler Bruggeman (2.91 gaa, .922 sv %.) and Mike Taffe (1.00 gaa, .959 sv % ) have split time so far between the pipes for Fairbanks.

Games Friday and Saturday and Lakeview Arena begin at 7:30 PM.

(NAHL) New-look Dr. Pepper Arena braces for Tornado......

For the Texas Tornado, there’s no place like home.

Make that a newly decked out home, one the team will christen this weekend when the South Division rival Topeka RoadRunners come to town for a two-game set on Friday and Saturday.

With Texas amidst a one-year hiatus from the NAHL, the Tornado’s rink, the Dr Pepper Arena in the Dallas suburb of Frisco, underwent a serious makeover and the finished product is drawing rave reviews.

“As nice as it was before, it’s now the best facility of its size in the country,” said Tornado head coach Tony Curtale, who also serves as the team’s president.

Seating capacity was bumped up by over 1,000 from 3,733 seats to
4,944, and the expanded facility also spared no expense with additional suites, new restrooms and concourse concession stands, an enhanced promenade and three new video boards.

A concourse-level club lounge was also added with direct access to suites on the west side of the arena, and a new parking garage was erected to accommodate 1,000 more spaces.

“It’s a beautiful place, and it’s better than any other I’ve seen in the U.S.,” said Curtale. “It was very nice before, but this has all the bells and whistles now.”

All the rink upgrades aside, buzz around town has been building since the Tornado announced it was returning to the league last spring.

“The response we’ve gotten has been extremely positive,” said Curtale, who has guided the team to four Robertson Cup championships during his tenure as coach. “People are thrilled the Tornado is back, and that we’re back in the fabric of the city and the area.”

That should translate into tired turnstiles by the end of the weekend.

“We’re expecting a good crowd and a very enthusiastic crowd,” he said. “There’s a lot of loyal people who have been Tornado people for 10 years now.”

In other action around the NAHL this weekend, the defending Central Division champion Bismarck Bobcats also open their home schedule. They’ll tangle with the West Division’s Alaska Avalanche for a two-game set beginning on Friday.

With an 0-2-2 mark at last week’s NAHL Showcase Tournament, Bobcats head coach Byron Pool is hoping some hometown support will help right the ship.

“We haven’t started the year quite the way we wanted to, but now we have a chance to bounce back in front of the home crowd here at the VFW (Sports Center), which would be great,” he said.

“There were a lot of positives from the Showcase, but also a lot of things we’re going to need to improve. It all starts with effort, though, so I’m expecting to see a renewed effort from all of our guys this weekend.”

The Fairbanks Ice Dogs will also stay in the Lower 48 this weekend, visiting the North Division's Marquette Rangers for a pair of tilts on Friday and Saturday.

Optimistic after going a formidable 3-1 at the Showcase, Rangers head coach Kenny Miller isn’t losing focus on continual improvement as the divisional schedule nears.

“The Showcase was great, but that was last week,” he said. “We’re really trying to focus in on today, and what we need to do today to be a better hockey team.

“We’re pleased with what we’ve seen so far, but we’re really trying to get across to the guys that everyday is important. We’re not talking about playoffs, we’re not talking about points in the division, we’re not talking about next week; we’re truly working on just being as good of a hockey team today as we can be.”

In other games this weekend, the Showcase champion Wenatchee Wild travels to Alpena for a three-game set against the IceDiggers, while the Springfield Jr. Blues bus to Wichita Falls for two games against the Wildcats.

The Kenai River Brown Bears will play a pair on the road against the North Iowa Outlaws, with the Albert Lea Thunder hosting the Alexandria Blizzard on Friday and the Owatonna Express on Saturday.

(NOJHL) NOJHL 3 Stars of the Week, ending Sept. 20......

The NOJHL (Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League) is pleased to announce its “Three Stars of the Week”; for the week ending on Sunday, September 20th. With just two weeks of play in the books, the league looks to be as closely contested as many previous years, with eight of the opening 17 games decided by just a single goal.

The Stars are as follows:

MICHAEL SCHUG (Soo Thunderbirds) - The 17 year-old Sault Ste Marie native appears ready to make a seamless transition from Great North Midget League action to the NOJHL. In three games last week, Schug tallied three goals and four assists, finding himself atop the league leader board in a four way tie with nine points in the early going.

Schug finished fifth in scoring with the Soo North Stars one year ago, recording 37 points in 32 games, including 16 goals.

CHRIS KANGAS (Sudbury Kal Tire Jr Wolves) - Looking to make the most of his final year with the Jr Wolves, Chris Kangas wants to take a step up the league scoring ladder after finishing second only to Dustin Fummerton of North Bay last year. In three games last week, Kangas picked up three goals and a pair of assists, named as the game’s second star on two separate occasions.

The 20 year-old Sudbury native was involved in 50% of his team’s scoring as the Junior Wolves recorded their first win of the year, before dropping a pair of tight, one-goal games.

DREW McMILLAN (Blind River Beavers) - Now in his third year with the Beavers, Drew McMillan will be counted upon to help lead the attack this year. McMillan chalked up more than a point a game last year, finishing with 27 points in just 20 games.

Last week, his four-point output (which included three goals) lifted his season total to nine points in just five games. The 18 year-old Blind River native scored a pair of goals to help lift the Beavers past the Sudbury Kal Tire Jr Wolves 3-2 on Saturday.

(MJAHL) Ashley and Caps rule scoring......

The first two weeks of MJAHL action have produced some very close games and it's certainly too early to tell who will emerge on top, both in the way of standings, or in terms of who will dominate the scoring column. However, one thing is certain: the Summerside Western Capitals are on top in the scoring column and rookie Darcy Ashley is the league-leading scorer.

It comes as no surprise that new Head Coach Gordie Dwyer is excited about what the future holds for the 16 year-old Ashley. Dwyer not only likes his scoring abilities, but sees him as one of his top workhorses. "He tested in top physical condition and has been a top performer since opening day", says Dwyer. "Darcy has great offensive instincts and is a real competitor. He has a strong work ethic and will continue to improve. Darcy will be an impact player for the Summerside Western Capitals and a sure fan favorite."

Ashley, a 5' 9" 170lb winger drafted from the Cornwall Thunder, has turned in a very impressive 11 points in four games (5 goals, 6 assists). His most impressive outing was Sunday night against Campbellton where the rookie notched up two goals and two assists. In addition to his leading in points, Ashley is the top goal scorer at this point with 5.

Harrison McIver and Chad Earle are close behind their teammate - both players have 9 points, tied for third behind Miramichi's Matt Milson, last week's Player of the Week. Nathan Desroches is next for the Caps with 8 points. Two more Caps round out the top 10 in scoring as Neil Sherren and Trevor Carmichael hold the 9th and 10th spots with 6 points each.

Then, after seeing Terrbeonne create equality, Olivier Lafontaine Lafontaine has given advance at his own following a fine piece of play by Eric-Alexandre Roy.

The second period gave us the right to open the game, but the guards of the two teams have been solid not conceding anything to the opponent.

In the third period, the Thetfordois were given a two-goal lead. It is the young Tommy Giroux, who beat the goalkeeper at the beginning of the period. Veins by cons have squandered a two-goal lead but eventually won by the labeled with 4 to 3 in a shootout. It's David Brousseau, veins which ended the duel in the pants off guard in Terrebonne housing the disc into the top corner.

In this large gain, the guardian of Thetfordois, Dwayne Rodrigue has once again illustrated by constantly pushing the attacks of the Cobras. Indeed, he blocked 59 of 62 shots he faced.

(OJAHL) Hawks show moxie in win over Huntsville......

The Trenton Golden Hawks still have a lot of work to do, especially on special teams, but performances like Saturday's 3-2 win over the Huntsville Otters should go a long way toward building team confidence. After another shaky display on special teams in a 5-1 loss to the Buffalo Jr. Sabres Friday at the Ontario Jr. A Hockey League's College Showcase in Oakville, the Hawks rebounded with a gritty effort that allowed them to beat Huntsville. "I was proud of the way we rebounded and responded after Friday's loss to Buffalo," Hawks' general manager Tim Clayden said. With head coach Matt Muir away at a family wedding, Clayden handled the coaching duties Saturday. "We showed some moxie against Huntsville, and it was fun to be a Golden Hawk." Clayden was particularly impressed with the play of Trenton native Travis White in Saturday's win. "He had a hell of a game, and played very strong defensively. We got up a goal late, and Huntsville was pressing. It looked like they had a shot teed up from the point and Trav threw his body out there and blocked a boomer. It really inspired the entire team. He earned the Game Hard Hat," Clayden said. The Hawks opened the scoring late in the first period on a pretty play that saw Nick Camilleri feed White, who then saucered a perfect pass through a Huntsville defender's legs and onto the stick of Joe Davies who made no mistake burying the opportunity. Huntsville tied the game early in the second period on a goal by Beau Orser. However, newcomer Brad Gehl, who was acquired late last week from the Peterborough Petes, put the Hawks back in front midway through the final stanza. Jeremie Gauthier and Rod Bouchard drew assists on the play. Huntsville tied it again three minutes later on a goal by Adam Ritchie. But the Hawks responded again when Jeremy McCarty converted a Pier Paul Landry and Taylor Pernerowski passing play for the game winner with 2:42 remaining. Spencer Finney stopped 31 Huntsville shots to improve to 2-0 on the season, as the Otters outshot the Hawks 33-22.

Off-Ice Hockey Training......

"Off-Ice Training...Made Simple"

The clock is ticking...

As a hockey coach, there's nothing more valuable than time. Between work, family and juggling practice - there's no wonder we have little time to properly plan hockey practice.

Hey, as a hockey coach I can relate. Remember when Bill Clinton said "I feel your pain". Well I do!

So I went on a mission (a selfish one at first) to create a template that would help me organize all my future off-ice practices. There were 2 goals for doing this...

1.Make it brain-dead simple to run training programs for this season (and future seasons)
2.If I couldn't make practice, I could hand my "templates" over to an assistant for them to run it without missing a beat
3.Save time! By not having to re-create the wheel each day, it saves me at least 2-3 hours per week.

About 6 months ago, I let Mark, a friend of mine who is also a hockey coach, "borrow" my system. And the results were astonishing..

He said I'd be crazy not to offer this to other coaches. In fact, he said I should charge at least $500 for this program (since that is what other "gurus" charge for similar programs - and they are not nearly as complete as mine).

So, after some thought, I decided to take a leap and humbly offer my system for sale to you, my fellow coach. I took some time to add in the most up-to-date information and make it a complete “how-to” guide.

The defensive battle continued until Adam Henderson scored into the empty net at 19:28 of the third period to seal the victory and waltz out of Thickwood Heights Arena with a 2-0 win.

Next up, the MOB will look to find their scoring touch when they face the Grande Prairie Storm Tuesday Night at Thickwood Heights Arena. Game time is 7:30. GO MOB GO!

(SIJHL) NORTH STARS TAKE GAME # 2 6-1......

Some of the good notes for period one were: Chase Dobranski with 4 face-off wins, and good work on the penalty kill by Geo Pascal, Clayton Lewis, Colten Brulé and Troy Dumais in keeping the North Stars off the score board until 11:37. But generally the Flyers were flat in the period in face of the opposition forwards who pressed the attack in a co-ordinated fashion. Scoring for the Stars were Jordan Davis from Randall Hanlan, and Riley Marsh from Kyle Breukelman, making it 2-0 for the visiting Team.

The Flyers picked up the pace early in the second stanza as Galen Matyjanka’s wrist shot found the top right corner of the net on a crisp pass from Alex Riveness, also assisted by Chase Dobranski. Flyers then pressed the issue with several shots on the net, one by Clayton Lewis ringing wide off the post.

Now we had excitement!

Following it up was Geo Pascal working hard on the fore check. David Novak making good saves and Nelson Rosiak blocking a shot. Momentum changed in favour of the Stars as they killed a five on three. North Stars third goal was a showdown which saw last years scoring champion Trevor Gamache take a pass from Mitch Forbes and unleash a lightening wrist shot behind the Flyers goalie. Not a bad period of hockey. Score 3-1.

The third period was a slug fest which followed on Hanlan scoring the fourth goal for the visitors at 6:13 and Szura scoring the North Stars fifth goal at 9:33. There were several fights. In the first, Brad Bienvenu squared off with Kyle Breukelman. Brad landed several good punches and took Kyle down to the ice emerging the clear winner. Next a North Star pugilist Dan Usiski, danced with Darnell Ferland. Usiski gained advantage and relented in a demonstration of sportsmanship. Following a slashing penalty by Shayne Kakegamic, the two teams erupted in what could be described as a line brawl. Relentless Flyer forward Adam Wensley, engaged big Cody Lund in the longest bout of the evening. Also defending the Flyers honour were local lads: Shayne Kakegamic, and Ian Alcock. When the dust had settled, a total of five players received game misconducts including Cody Lund and Jordan Carne of the North Stars.

Play resumed with 1: 56 remaining and three Flyers in the penalty box. Flyers goalie, David Novak valiantly tried to shut the door, but it was only a matter of time that the Stars dazzling pass sequences resulted in goal number six, credited to Jordan Davis from Josh Blacksmith. With mere seconds remaining never say die Flyer Kalan Ewald, intercepted a North Star pass, and zeroed in on the net. His top shelf shot beat the Stars goalie but did not beat the buzzer. Final Score: North Stars 6, Flyers 1.

The game did have its moments.

Next the Flyers meet their regional rivals The Dryden Ice Dogs, at Sioux Lookout’s Memorial Arena, on Tuesday September 22. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. on more Junior A hockey action.

(MJHL) Kings Sweep Opening Weekend......

After starting the 2009/10 season with three consecutive road games, where they went 2-1, the Kings hosted the Neepawa Natives Friday night and the OCN Blizzard Saturday night as part of their Opening Weekend.

Kings fans were introduced to their team prior to the start of Friday's game, which featured a light show, player introductions, the raising of a new banner and welcoming remarks from various dignitaries. Once all the pre-game festivities concluded, the Kings were looking to give the 1218 plus fans in attendance something to cheer about, and that didn't take long. Local product Ryan Dreger opened the scoring just :53 seconds into the home opener. Captain Steven Shamanski managed to find Dreger at the side of the net, who redirected home his first of two on the night to give Dauphin the early 1-0 lead. Allias Kalinsky would make it 2-0 when he buried his own rebound past Neepawa netminder Kelly Andrew while shorthanded. The Kings power play unit would then add to the lead, as Bryce Lamb (from Gaudry) and Shane Luke (from Lamb and Dreger) would both score just past the midway point of the opening period to give the Kings a 4-0 lead. Neepawa would score at the 14:49 mark to pull within three, as the Kings out shot the Natives 16-5 in the first period.

Neepawa would make it 4-2 early into the middle frame, when they scored a power play marker of their own. Shortly after killing off another Neepawa man advantage, the Kings would restore their three goal lead when Shamanski would once again set Dreger up to make it 5-2 at the 10:39 mark. Dauphin wasn't done there, as second year player Brett Fargher netted his first of the season when he fired home a wristshot while playing a rare shift on defence. Joe Caligiuri would make 12 saves in the second period, as the Kings took a 6-2 lead into the third period.

The third period would see both teams clamp down defensively, as they combined for only 10 shots. After a tight checking period, the Kings would skate away with their first home win of the 2009/10 campaign, downing Neepawa 6-2.

20 year old Ryan Dreger would lead the way offensively, scoring twice and adding an assist for a 3 point performance. Bryce Lamb (1G, 1A) and Steven Shamanski (2A) would also record multi-point games. Winnipeg native Joe Caligiuri would earn the win in net for the Kings, stopping 22 of 24 shots, improving his league leading win/loss record to 3-0.

The Kings went 2 for 5 with the man advantage, while Neepawa went 1 for 4. The Kings out shot the Natives 28-24.

The Kings looked to build off a strong performance in the Home Opener, as they faced the OCN Blizzard Saturday night, on a night which saw the Kings unveil their brand new Norwex 3rd jerseys.

Wearing the new red set, the Kings would once again open the scoring in the first minute of the game, this time at the :21 second mark. Brendan Baumgartner would fire a shot on net from a tough angle that would find a way to squeak through to give the Kings the early lead. Mike Boese and Allias Kalinsky would earn the assists on Baumgartner's second of the season. Both teams would be assessed three minor penalties each throughout the opening period, however the Kings would continue to lead 1-0 after 20 minutes.

Special teams would continue to play an important role in Saturday's game, as Dauphin went on the power play three times in the middle frame, and was also forced to kill off two penalties of their own. Brett Willows would turn aside all 7 shots he faced in the second period, as the Kings took a 1-0 lead into the third period.

OCN would pull even with the Kings at the 4:57 mark of the third period. With a total of 8 minor penalties being called throughout the period, the Kings looked to capitalize on one of their power play opportunities to regain the lead. 19 year old forward Colton Graf, who came over from the Battlefords North Stars, would score at the 12:41 mark to give the Kings a 2-1 lead. Steven Shamanski and Jacob Verheyden would assist on the go ahead goal, which was also Graf's first as a King. The Kings would limit OCN's chances late in the period, as they went on to win 2-1, and improve to 4-1 on the season.

Brendan Baumgartner, Colton Graf, Mike Boese, Allias Kalinsky, Steven Shamanski and Jacob Verheyden would all find their way onto the score sheet Saturday night. Kings' netminder Brett Willows would turn aside 20 of 21 shots against the Blizzard, as he improves his goals against average to an impressive 2.98.

The Kings went 1 for 8 on the power play, while OCN went 0 for 7. Dauphin's power play now sits at 30.0% on the season, while the penalty kill is 85.7%. Dauphin out shot OCN 36-21 Saturday, as they earned the home victory in front of 855 fans.

The Kings will now host the Winkler Flyers Tuesday night, who sport a 2-2 record on the season. Game time is 7:30pm.

(SJHL) SUCCESSFUL OPENING WEEKEND......

The first weekend of the 2009-10 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League season resulted in success stories on numerous fronts.

As far as the fan base is concerned, the SJHL entertained close to 10,000 through twelve games played with the Flin Flon Bombers leading the way with an announced attendance of 1401. The Weyburn Red Wings had 1156 on hand for their home opening win on Saturday, leading the way amongst the Sherwood Conference clubs. Overall, the weekend average was 800.

All twelve teams played two games over the course of Friday and Saturday and the La Ronge Ice Wolves, last year's cellar dwellers, were the only club to come away 2-and-0. All twelve teams managed, at least, a single point as the Nipawin Hawks went 0-1-and-1 against the Ice Wolves. In the Sherwood Conference, all six teams went 1-and-1, although Notre Dame leads the way with three points after taking Humboldt to a shootout in both matches.

Meanwhile, the SJHL and Access Communications debuted the SJHL Game Of The Week on Live Sports Video Friday night with Yorkton defeating Weyburn 3-1. President Laury Ryan was the first period intermission guest, talking about the evolving changes within the SJHL and the innovative ways the league product continues to market itself. Access 7 did a nice feature on new Battlefords forward Jordan Lane in the second intermission. Weyburn GM Ron Rumball was the guest during the inaugural edition of OVERTIME, the post game show. The archived game is available at Live Sports Video and will be rebroadcast on Access 7 this Thursday and Saturday.

With off days on Sunday and Monday, the SJHL regular season schedule resumes on Tuesday

(NOJHL) Soo T-Birds open with a loss......

It was the start they were looking for, but certainly not the finish.

The Soo Thunderbirds opened their home schedule on Wednesday night against the Soo (Mich.) Eagles with a 6-5 loss to their cross-border rivals. What made the loss even tougher to take was the 5-0 lead the Thunderbirds held at the eight-minute mark of the second period.

“I’m questioning them. I’m calling them out right now,” said Thunderbirds coach Pat Carricato. “I don’t think there’s enough character in that room right now. Either they find some or I’ll go out and find some.”

A dominant opening period saw the Thunderbirds outshoot the Eagles 18-1 and build up a 4-0 lead. Nicholas Romano, Kurtis Travaglini, Colin Barnauskas and Justin Thomas scored in the period for the locals. Michael Schug increased the lead to 5-0 just over seven minutes into the second period.

“After the first period I told them ‘Don’t give them life, don’t let them back in it. This game’s far from over,’” said Carricato. “They went out there in the second period and figured they’d do what they want and play a game of shinny. They were turning away from checks, not finishing checks. They weren’t playing as a team and they quit skating.”

Kevin Michelcavage led the Eagles comeback with a pair of goals, including the game-tying goal at 8:53 of the third period. Justin Scott, Kyle Slicker, Clayton Brackett and Anthony Raymond also scored for the Eagles in the win.

“Soo Michigan kept coming and they started working and got momentum and a lot of life and we just stood there like a deer in the headlights and watched it happen,” Carricato said.

John Klienhans stopped 33 shots for the Eagles after Michael Doan was pulled following the fourth Thunderbirds goal. Thunderbirds goaltender Ryan MacDonald stopped 17 shots in the loss.

The Thunderbirds have little time to recover from the loss as they travel to Blind River to take on the Beavers on Thursday night.

“Let’s throw them right back to the wolves and see how they respond,” Carricato said of the quick turn-around between games. “(Thursday) will be a character test. If they come out flat and don’t show any character or any enthusiasm or any pride then it’s up to me to fix that real quick.”

Next home action for the Thunderbirds will be Sunday night when they host the Manitoulin Islanders at 7 p.m.
