(SIJHL) NORTH STARS TAKE GAME # 2 6-1......

Some of the good notes for period one were: Chase Dobranski with 4 face-off wins, and good work on the penalty kill by Geo Pascal, Clayton Lewis, Colten Brulé and Troy Dumais in keeping the North Stars off the score board until 11:37. But generally the Flyers were flat in the period in face of the opposition forwards who pressed the attack in a co-ordinated fashion. Scoring for the Stars were Jordan Davis from Randall Hanlan, and Riley Marsh from Kyle Breukelman, making it 2-0 for the visiting Team.

The Flyers picked up the pace early in the second stanza as Galen Matyjanka’s wrist shot found the top right corner of the net on a crisp pass from Alex Riveness, also assisted by Chase Dobranski. Flyers then pressed the issue with several shots on the net, one by Clayton Lewis ringing wide off the post.

Now we had excitement!

Following it up was Geo Pascal working hard on the fore check. David Novak making good saves and Nelson Rosiak blocking a shot. Momentum changed in favour of the Stars as they killed a five on three. North Stars third goal was a showdown which saw last years scoring champion Trevor Gamache take a pass from Mitch Forbes and unleash a lightening wrist shot behind the Flyers goalie. Not a bad period of hockey. Score 3-1.

The third period was a slug fest which followed on Hanlan scoring the fourth goal for the visitors at 6:13 and Szura scoring the North Stars fifth goal at 9:33. There were several fights. In the first, Brad Bienvenu squared off with Kyle Breukelman. Brad landed several good punches and took Kyle down to the ice emerging the clear winner. Next a North Star pugilist Dan Usiski, danced with Darnell Ferland. Usiski gained advantage and relented in a demonstration of sportsmanship. Following a slashing penalty by Shayne Kakegamic, the two teams erupted in what could be described as a line brawl. Relentless Flyer forward Adam Wensley, engaged big Cody Lund in the longest bout of the evening. Also defending the Flyers honour were local lads: Shayne Kakegamic, and Ian Alcock. When the dust had settled, a total of five players received game misconducts including Cody Lund and Jordan Carne of the North Stars.

Play resumed with 1: 56 remaining and three Flyers in the penalty box. Flyers goalie, David Novak valiantly tried to shut the door, but it was only a matter of time that the Stars dazzling pass sequences resulted in goal number six, credited to Jordan Davis from Josh Blacksmith. With mere seconds remaining never say die Flyer Kalan Ewald, intercepted a North Star pass, and zeroed in on the net. His top shelf shot beat the Stars goalie but did not beat the buzzer. Final Score: North Stars 6, Flyers 1.

The game did have its moments.

Next the Flyers meet their regional rivals The Dryden Ice Dogs, at Sioux Lookout’s Memorial Arena, on Tuesday September 22. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. on more Junior A hockey action.
