The Jim Wilson Couchiching Terriers put just enough effort into their home opener at the Rama MASK to win the match 7-5 against the Collingwood Blues said Terriers coach Randy Salmon.
"It was sloppy," he said of last night's game. "We didn't play a great game, we just played well enough to win."
The team worked hard, but didn't play smart, Salmon said.
"Defensive zone responsibilities - we lacked in that tonight," he said. "They have a lot of work to do."
The Terriers were down 1-2 after the first period, but picked it up in the second to make it 5-4.
During the third period, a fight broke out between a Terriers player and three Collingwood team members.
"Our guys just stood there, they didn't want to go in," Salmon said, disappointed.
"I want my guys in there pulling guys off, at least. You don't let three guys sucker punch a guy. You got to go in and help out."
Salmon wants to see the team become aggressive with grit and determination, he said.
"I didn't see as much grit as I'd like to see and maybe I don't have the right players for that," he said. "You can't really teach grit; you have to have the grit."
If the current players don't display this strong personality during play, Salmon may have to find some new players.
"We will play through three or five games and if we don't have those tough, grit players we're going to have to go out and find them," he said.
The team has 12 new players, one being Barrie's Brian Hughes, who scored one goal and two assists during the home opener.
"A rookie coming through was a great surprise," Salmon said. "Real nice to see."
Hughes was proud of his game, he said.
"I certainly tried to impress people, tried to impress myself," Hughes said. "I'm going to be here for the year, might as well try and impress the team and it's how I play, too."
Assistant captain Matt Smyth scored four goals throughout the game.
"I put my head down and shot the puck. I got a little lucky," he said.
Smyth commended Hughes for his effort during the game.
"That's awesome," Smyth said of Hughes' goal and assists.
"Pat on the back to him. He's a good player, he was in the right spot at the right time and buried the ball."
The Terriers next match is an away game on Friday against Mississauga.
