The Bonnyville Pontiacs started the 2009/2010 season on the right foot with a thrilling 4-3 victory over the St. Albert Steel. Kirk Belyk (Pictured) scored two goals and collected an assist in the game. Veteran Brennan Volcan and rookie Kevin Carthy scored the other two goals for the Pontiacs.
The Pontiacs came out hard to start the first period but fell flat backwards after the Steel collected two quick goals, one on the power play. Daniel Carr and Reed Linaker scored for the Steel less than a minute apart to give their team a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.
The Pontiacs responded in the second period while on a power play when Kirk Belyk scored the first goal of the season for the Pontiacs with Lucas Isley and Devon Kalinski collecting the assists.
With the score 2-1 going into the third period the Pontiacs put the pedal to the metal and scored three goals. Kirk Belyk scored his second goal of the night at 4:20 with the assists going to Brennan Volcan and Devon Kalinski to tie the game up at 2-2. 26 seconds later the Pontiacs took the lead when rookie Kevin Carthy scored his first AJHL goal with the lone assist going to Michael Westfall. At 15:42 the Pontiacs took a two goal lead as Brennan Volcan scored with Kirk Belyk providing the assist, his third point of the night. The Steel made it close with Philip Gervais scoring at 17:21 but it was too little too late as the Pontiacs were able to stave off the Steel for the rest of the game to take home the 4-3 victory.
Kirk Belyk had a stellar night with two goals and one assist and was good enough to be given the nod for the player of the game for the Pontiacs while Daniel Carr was given the same honor for the Steel. Julien Laplante collected his first win of the season for the Pontiacs as he stopped 37 of 40 shots fired at him.
The Pontiacs now take to the road for a couple of games. Tomorrow the Pontiacs face the Crusaders in Sherwood Park with game time at 2:15pm. On Friday September 18th the Pontiacs will be hosted by the Camrose Kodiaks with game time at 7:30pm. The next home game will be Wednesday, September 23rd at 7:30pm when the Pontiacs will host the Grande Prairie Storm.
