The NOJHL (Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League) is pleased to announce its “Three Stars of the Week”; for the week ending on Sunday, September 20th. With just two weeks of play in the books, the league looks to be as closely contested as many previous years, with eight of the opening 17 games decided by just a single goal.
The Stars are as follows:
MICHAEL SCHUG (Soo Thunderbirds) - The 17 year-old Sault Ste Marie native appears ready to make a seamless transition from Great North Midget League action to the NOJHL. In three games last week, Schug tallied three goals and four assists, finding himself atop the league leader board in a four way tie with nine points in the early going.
Schug finished fifth in scoring with the Soo North Stars one year ago, recording 37 points in 32 games, including 16 goals.
CHRIS KANGAS (Sudbury Kal Tire Jr Wolves) - Looking to make the most of his final year with the Jr Wolves, Chris Kangas wants to take a step up the league scoring ladder after finishing second only to Dustin Fummerton of North Bay last year. In three games last week, Kangas picked up three goals and a pair of assists, named as the game’s second star on two separate occasions.
The 20 year-old Sudbury native was involved in 50% of his team’s scoring as the Junior Wolves recorded their first win of the year, before dropping a pair of tight, one-goal games.
DREW McMILLAN (Blind River Beavers) - Now in his third year with the Beavers, Drew McMillan will be counted upon to help lead the attack this year. McMillan chalked up more than a point a game last year, finishing with 27 points in just 20 games.
Last week, his four-point output (which included three goals) lifted his season total to nine points in just five games. The 18 year-old Blind River native scored a pair of goals to help lift the Beavers past the Sudbury Kal Tire Jr Wolves 3-2 on Saturday.
