Saturday night was the home opener for the Burlington Cougars and they didn't disappoint the many fans that attended the game. The game was quite physical from the opening puck drop with Burlington handing out most of the huge open ice checks. There weren't just huge hits but great goals from the Cougars. A four-player fight at the end of the game to top it all off. This was the 2nd of back to back games versus Hamilton; they took the first game over Hamilton 6-2 at Mountain Arena Friday night. Sunday night saw the Cougars take down the Derbys with an identical 6-2 score. With the weekend sweep, the Burlington Cougars are 3-0 to start the season. Here is the game summary from Saturday evening's tilt:
1st period: The 1st period was more of a chance for the teams to make adjustments from Friday night's game. Both teams seemed to have a very rough period, pucks bouncing, and giveaways. In the frame, the Cougars were out shot 12-4, but amazing goaltending by Drew Fielding keep the score tied at zero.
2nd Period: The second period had both teams get their defensive and offensive game together. There were many massive body checks handed out by Burlington players. A goal wasn't registered in the game until Hamilton got on the board first with a shorthanded goal with under five minutes to play. With 26.6 seconds remaining in the 2nd period Greg Carey puts one in the back of the net assisted from Josh Jooris, Phil Brewer.
3rd Period: The third period seemed to be the most entertaining period of hockey the cougars have played this year. Burlington opened up the 3rd period with a goal from the rookie Myles Falasca assisted by Tristan Lysko, followed only a few minutes later by Myles' second tally, assisted by Tristan Lysco. After that Hamilton seemed to lose their composure and started taking unnecessary penalties which Burlington would capitalize on twice. Greg Carey would score his second of the game on the power play assisted from Josh Jooris and Bobby Gertsakis. Hamilton would score next with a wide open net. This just wasn't enough to get them back in the game. Cougars put another in the back of the net which was Greg Carey's third goal of the game sending the Red Wings packing. With 24 seconds remaining the gloves came off between two Cougar players and two Hamilton Players, the fight was very short but sure packed a big punch.
Thanks to the fans for coming out to the Burlington Cougars Home Opener. The Cougs travel to Dixie on Thursday evening for a matchup against the Beehives. On Saturday morning, Burlington will face the Cobourg Cougars - a game being held in Bownmanville. Their next home game at Wave Twin Rinks will take be a 3pm matinee, this Sunday, September 20th, 2009 versus Stouffville.
