John Moore played in his first NHL preseason game on Tuesday night as his Columbus Blue Jackets visited the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins.
Not only did Moore play his first NHL game, he recorded his first point when he collected an assist on the Blue Jackets' second goal of the game, a power play tally at 15:21 of the second period. After building a 3-0 lead, the Blue Jackets fell to the Penguins 5-4 in overtime. Moore registered 16:38 of icetime in his first contest.
Moore was the 2008-09 USHL Defenseman of the Year and captain of the Chicago Steel. He was selected by Columbus in the first round (21st overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
The 18-year-old native of Winnetka, Illinois signed an entry-level contract with the Blue Jackets this summer at the conclusion of his two-year USHL career. He posted 39 points (14g, 25a) in 57 games for the Steel during the 2008-09 season.
Moore has been in training camp with the Columbus Blue Jackets after competing with other Columbus prospects last week at the NHL Prospects Tournament in Traverse City, Michigan. The defenseman had his first professional experience and faced one of the NHL's top stars as Sidney Crosby was in the lineup for the Penguins.
The USHL celebrates its 31st season of junior hockey in 2009-10. With 190 players from the 2008-09 campaign already committed to NCAA Division I schools and 17 NHL Entry Draft picks taken from the League's rosters this past season, the USHL is the nation's foremost producer of junior hockey talent.
