(MJAHL) Summerside D-man joins UNB......

The UNB Varsity Reds have announced the addition of defenseman Spencer Corcoran from the Summerside Western Capitals to their line-up for the upcoming 2009-10 hockey season. The 6’ 1" 200lbs native of Summerside, PEI spent 2 seasons with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles of the QMJHL before heading back to Summerside for his final Junior season.

The rugged Corcoran had a career year in Summerside, helping lead his team to the Maritime Junior A regular season and play-off championship. He was top 10 in league scoring with 9-58 – 67 points along with a league leading 295 penalty minutes. In the playoffs, Corcoran scored 24 points in just 13 games and for his efforts was named MVP of the MJAHL playoffs.

The Capitals went on the win the Fred Page Cup and a trip to the Royal Bank Cup National Championships in BC. Unfortunately, Corcoran suffered a ruptured spleen in the Fred Page tournament and was unable to attend the finals.

“Spencer had a great season in Summerside and helped them win a Championship while really growing all parts of his game. He is physical, highly competitive and hungry for continued success at the university level. We’ve had great success with PEI players such as Darryl Boyce and Stacy Smallman who both won National Champions here at UNB. As well, we’ve had great success with Maritime Junior A players as evident by Lachlan MacIntosh and Travis Fullerton both playing key roles in our success last year and both being named All-Stars at the Nationals.” were the comments of UNB Head coach Gardiner MacDougall. Corcoran will join former Cape Breton teammates Chris Culligan and Jordan Clendenning at UNB where he will study business.
