Thunderbirds Beat the North Bay Trappers 4-3 in Their First Exhibition GameBirdwatch, September 4, 2009
The Soo Thunderbirds won their first exhibition game tonight against theTrappers at Memorial Gardens in North Bay. The game started with a goodpace and Jerry Petingalo started the scoring at 07:09 when Kevin Smith feda sweet stretch pass to Ryan McLean, McLean fed Petingalo on the wall andPetingalo made a nice move and tucked it in upstairs.
Andy Grypma scored the TBirds second goal at 10:36 of the second period,assisted by Kurtis Travaglini and Colin Barnauskas. Tbird Kevin Smithdropped the gloves at 13:35 of the second and laid a few bombs on TrapperJesse Cere. After the altercation the TBirds went into a bit of a scrambleand it costed them.
The Trappers pulled back at 15:20 of the second with a goal from JonathonAubertin. Aubertin was the best player on the night for the Trappers. TheTrappers then tied it at 17:49 of the second on a goal from BrendanGalley. JerryPetingalo then pulled the TBirds ahead to end the secondperiod when Jerry Petingalo found the back of the net after a scramble infront of the Trappers net at 19:31.
The winning goal was scored at 8:47 of the third with a nice passing play,Tyler Evoy started the play with a nice pass up the right side to JerryPetingalo, who then fed a quick pass to Tyler Evoy who buried it behind NBgoalie Michael Mitchell. The Tbirds showed some good PK to end the game.Ryan McDonald recorded the win for the TBirds stopping 27 of 30 shots.Michael Mitchell stopped 28 of 32 shots for the Trappers. TBirds resumeplay Sat. Sept. 5, 4 PM in Temiscaming to face the Royals.
It was a rather sloppy game at times, as the TBird rookies showed their
nerves. But given that it was the first game of the year, it was a goodstart to the 2009-2010 season.
